AFL superstar announces engagement

Titanic at 25: like the ship itself, James Cameron’s film is a bit of a wreck

<p>When it was released 25 years ago, James Cameron’s <em>Titanic</em> was enormous. It made stars of its two leads, Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. Reviews overwhelmingly heaped praise not only on the technical aspects of the film but also the acting and storyline. </p> <p>In 1997, <em>Titanic</em> was, in the oft-quoted line from the film, “king of the world!”</p> <p>At the time we were all swept up in the romantic tale of Jack Dawson and Rose DeWitt Bukater, the star-crossed lovers whose infatuation on the doomed ship ended when Jack made the ultimate sacrifice, freezing in the icy Atlantic to save his truly beloved. </p> <p>But over the years, critics and audiences alike have re-examined the film and found, like the ship itself, it is a bit of a wreck.</p> <p>When it was originally released, a <a href="https://www.newspapers.com/image/258048661/?clipping_id=97758112&amp;fcfToken=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJmcmVlLXZpZXctaWQiOjI1ODA0ODY2MSwiaWF0IjoxNjc1MzQ2NDQ1LCJleHAiOjE2NzU0MzI4NDV9.zwnunz556NCc1QF_m4T6QFNTGu2W4b00ograrsGd8Fg">small</a> <a href="https://www.newspapers.com/image/175704135/?clipping_id=97762030&amp;fcfToken=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJmcmVlLXZpZXctaWQiOjE3NTcwNDEzNSwiaWF0IjoxNjc1MzQ2NTYxLCJleHAiOjE2NzU0MzI5NjF9.pkc0x_OXwU9EdMc-d95Q6-aXrCOMQf7Sf8ph9svWrv0">number</a> of <a href="https://www.newspapers.com/clip/97760857/titanic-1/">critics</a> deeply disliked <em>Titanic</em>.</p> <p>Today, <a href="https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/titanic/reviews?page=3&amp;type=user">more and more</a> people are re-evaluating their originally positive response to the film and are changing their opinions. From the characters, to the story, to the ending, there are a number of issues with <em>Titanic</em> that appear questionable at best, and deeply unsettling at worst. </p> <p>It’s even gone far enough that <a href="https://thetempest.co/2016/09/28/entertainment/5-reasons-titanic-is-the-worst-movie-ever/">some critics</a> are calling it the worst film ever made – but that may be taking it too far.</p> <p><iframe title="YouTube video player" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/I7c1etV7D7g" width="560" height="315" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe></p> <h2>An unhealthy obsession</h2> <p>At the beginning of the film, we find upper-class Rose being forced into marriage with “Cal” Hockley by her widowed mother, Ruth, to save the family fortune and keep their status in society. So unhappy with her situation, Rose decides to jump from the ship. She is rescued by the penniless drifter, Jack. </p> <p>So begins the plot of the film as the pair constantly run and hide from the authorities to be together.</p> <p>Jack’s relentless pursuit of Rose around the ship is obsessive. We learn virtually nothing about the character of Jack Dawson apart from him being a poor orphaned artist, he wants Rose, and he will do anything to have her – even though they’ve only known each other for a few days. </p> <p>Is this a healthy relationship?</p> <p>Rose is only 17 years old and possibly too inexperienced to identify a stalker or manipulator. Influenced by Jack’s charm, Rose turns against her mother, fiancĂ© and pretty much everyone else in her life. And how could she not? On board the Titanic, almost every wealthy and upper-class person is portrayed as a villain while the people in third class, or steerage, are shown as a salt-of-the-earth, decent and virtuous. Rose’s fiancĂ© is at every turn just a mean, callous man who cares nothing for Rose or for anyone but himself.</p> <p>Even when the ship is sinking, the officers on board discriminate against the steerage passengers, ensuring only the well-to-do board the lifeboats – just one of the many <a href="https://screenrant.com/titanic-james-cameron-historial-inaccuracies-right/">historical inaccuracies</a>. </p> <p>All of the upper-class characters we meet on Titanic get little screen time, apart from when they are being desultory, cruel or malicious. They appear two-dimensional, lacking meaningful emotions.</p> <h2>True love?</h2> <p>One of the main themes of the film, that true love goes on beyond death, also appears overly sentimental and simplistic in modern times. We understand young teens often lack maturity in relationships and often <a href="https://www.betterhelp.com/advice/love/young-love-can-be-a-confusing-emotion/">mistake</a> lust or infatuation for love. </p> <p>Would Jack and Rose’s relationship have lasted if Jack had survived? He was broke with no visible means of support. She was 17. Their love affair is a fantasy of no responsibility while on board the ship. Where would it have gone in the real world?</p> <p>This directs us to another issue. Rose survives the sinking and goes on to marry another man and have a family with children and grandchildren. However, when Rose dies at the end of the film her “spirit” descends to the wreck of the ship where she is reunited with the “love of her life” Jack. </p> <p>Surely this is a slap in the face to her deceased husband and family. She lived her entire life with these people, yet the film ends up with Rose in the afterlife with someone she knew for a few days.</p> <h2>Filled with holes</h2> <p>Often, critiquing films with modern sensibilities can be unfair. However, <em>Titanic</em> includes a fair number of issues that, even considered with the social mores of the time in which it was made, appear problematic. </p> <p>This does not take away from the enjoyment many people have gained from the film over the years, and its technical brilliance. But it does give increased weight to the critics who spoke against the film in 1997. </p> <p>Like the ship itself, the film <em>Titanic</em> is a relic of a different time. James Cameron caught giving fans the bird after being booed

<p dir="ltr">Legendary director James Cameron has been caught flipping off the fans who booed him for not signing autographs over the weekend.</p> <p dir="ltr">After the famed director attended a screening of his new film, Avatar: The Way of Water, in LA, he refused to stop for a crowd of autograph-seeking fans.</p> <p dir="ltr">Cameron, 68, powered past the group of people asking him to sign their items, which caused the crowd to turn on him and shout.</p> <p dir="ltr">“F**k Avatar,” one person yelled, as Cameron was escorted into a black car.</p> <p dir="ltr">As the cheering and jeering continued, the Titanic filmmaker slightly rolled down his tinted window to reveal his middle finger.</p> <p dir="ltr">Fans were divided over the interaction, with some calling him a “jerk” and “annoying.” Others dubbed him “a legend” and argued that the people booing him weren’t real fans.</p> <p dir="ltr">“They were fake fans ready to resell autographed stuff 100%. The embarrassing way they reacted to his refusal proves that. Friends star claims Cameron Diaz punched him on date

<p dir="ltr">Matthew Perry claimed that Cameron Diaz punched him in the face while out on a date.</p> <p dir="ltr">The <em>Friends</em> star revealed in his memoir titled <em>Friends, Lovers And The Big Terrible Thing</em>, that he was set up with the <em>Charlie’s Angels</em> star after she split up from Justin Timberlake in 2007.</p> <p dir="ltr">The pair went out in a group setting but it was apparent to Perry that Diaz just wasn’t interested, and he says she immediately got stoned.</p> <p dir="ltr">Perry continued trying to get the actress’ attention by saying something “witty” during a round of Pictionary, which did not go down so well.</p> <p dir="ltr">He claims that Diaz, who was allegedly stoned, tried to hit him on the shoulder but then “accidentally” hit him in the face.</p> <p dir="ltr">'Are you f***ing kidding me?' he recalled saying to Diaz.</p> <p dir="ltr">Perry and Diaz obviously did not eventuate into anything, with rocker Benji Madden eventually putting a ring on the actress' finger.</p> <p dir="ltr">In his memoir, Perry is exposing past relationships including a <a href="https://oversixty.com.au/lifestyle/relationships/matthew-perry-reveals-rendezvous-with-julia-roberts" target="_blank" rel="noopener">rendezvous with Julia Roberts</a>.</p> <p dir="ltr">Perry found himself on the receiving end of Roberts’ flirty messages before he found out that she only agreed to appear in Friends if they shared the storyline.</p> <p dir="ltr">The actors went on to date before Perry’s mental health deteriorated and the couple split.</p> <p dir="ltr"><em>Images: Getty</em></p>

<p dir="ltr">Cameron Diaz has celebrated her 50th birthday surrounded by friends and family.</p> <p dir="ltr">The beloved Hollywood actress’ 50th birthday milestone was a star-studded affair featuring husband Benji Madden and his twin brother Joel, sister-in-law Nicole Richie, Adele, Zoe Saldaña, her The Other Woman costar Leslie Mann and Mann's husband Judd Apatow. </p> <p dir="ltr">A source told <a href="https://people.com/movies/cameron-diaz-celebrates-50th-birthday-with-famous-friends-exclusive/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">People</a> that Cameron “celebrated for hours” with her family and friends.</p> <p dir="ltr">"Cameron was wonderful. Inside Princess Di's personal workout regime

<p>An Australia personal trainer has shared the rigorous workout routine he did with Princess Diana.</p> <p>Cameron Falloon helped train the princess from 1995 and 1996 at a gym in Earl's Court, London.</p> <p>He said Princess Diana was not just a fashion icon for wearing workout gear, but was dedicated to actually bettering herself physically.</p> <p>"She was very dedicated, she was an extremely hard worker. When her schedule allowed between her Royal philanthropic duties, she was doing two to three times a week minimum at the gym," he told <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-10865221/Aussie-gym-owner-reveals-like-training-late-Princess-Diana-London.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Daily Mail Australia</a>.</p> <p>"She also went for walks and runs. She was very dedicated. Cameron Daddo on the best marriage advice he’s received

<p dir="ltr">Cameron Daddo and wife Alison Brahe appeared on a podcast together this week, and together shared some of the best advice they’ve received during their 30-year marriage.</p> <p dir="ltr">Appearing on Nova’s Separate Bathrooms podcast, during a segment titled ‘30 Lessons in 30 Years’, the beloved couple opened up about their lengthy marriage and what advice has and hasn’t worked for them.</p> <p dir="ltr">One piece of advice that Daddo considers paramount is “learn how to apologise”. Struggling to hold back tears, Daddo explained, "We were told by Reverend Brian that married us. He said you're going to hurt your partner the most of anyone in your life. In my case, it's probably true.</p> <p dir="ltr">"So it's a good idea to learn how to apologise, mean it and then make the necessary actions, so you don't repeat it. That's a good lesson."</p> <p dir="ltr">Brahe said that being able to have difficult conversations has done wonders for their relationship. She elaborated, "My next one is have the hard conversations, particularly the ones about the relationship. And that's what's worked for us.</p> <p dir="ltr">“Having those hard conversations is a little bit like labour and birth, where you go, 'Oh, it's just agonising to have this. Where's this guy?' We keep pushing through, and guaranteed we've always come out the other side feeling better."</p> <p dir="ltr">Daddo confessed that those conversations often leave him exhausted, but that they were important for any relationship to move forward. "There needs to be action after the hard conversations. Because if you're just having hard conversations and then not doing anything afterwards, they become harder the next time.</p> <p dir="ltr">“We've had this conversation and nothing happened. So just I think an addendum to that is have the hard conversations and then take action based on what you resolve or where you get to afterwards,” he said.</p> <p dir="ltr">The couple got married in 1991 after dating for just three months, and have three children together: daughters Lotus and Bodhi, and son River. They’ve been through their share of ups and downs, with Daddo admitting to having an affair in 1994. Tragedy strikes solo sailor Jessica Watson

Olympic gold medallist's son dead at 26

Kirk Douglas’ grandson reflects on his passing in emotional interview

<p>Kirk Douglas’ grandson has honoured the late acting legend in an emotional interview.</p> <p>Speaking to <em><a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/cameron-douglas-legacy-grandfather-kirk-douglas-hard-imagine-anyone-doing-it-better-1278758">The Hollywood Reporter</a></em>, Cameron Douglas said it was difficult to lose his grandfather, who died on February 5 at the age of 103.</p> <p>“He was always there, always supportive and he believed in me even when maybe I had given up on myself,” said Cameron, who previously struggled with drug addiction.</p> <p>“Losing him is one of those things that, even when you sort of see it coming 
 it’s still difficult.</p> <p>“I take solace in the pride of being his grandson and having had the opportunity to spend as much time with him as I have. When I look at his life, what he accomplished and the way he carried himself, it's hard for me to imagine anyone doing it any better.”</p> <p>Cameron said he brought his partner Viviane Thibes and daughter Lua Izzy to Los Angeles so that the family could spend more time with Kirk.</p> <p>“I moved about 15 minutes away from them and have been spending a lot of time with him, bringing my daughter [and] Vivian over on weekends,” said the 41-year-old.</p> <p>“Just watching the bond between my daughter and grandfather was extremely special.</p> <p>“He would light up every time she was around. When she was in the same room, all she wanted to do was either be in his lap or be the focus of his attention. I'll remind her of that when she gets older, showing her that connection through photos.”</p> <p>Cameron followed in the footsteps of his father Michael and his grandfather to become an actor after serving nearly eight years in prison for possessing cocaine and <a href="https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/cameron-douglas-long-way-home-book-memoir-hollywood-life-prison-a9180571.html">distributing methamphetamine</a>.</p> <p>“He said to me, not that long ago, ‘Cameron, I’m so happy to see that you’re finally functioning’. That’s this kind of credo among the members of our family – to be ‘functioning’ – and I know that made him proud.”</p>

Queen “fuming” over David Cameron's tell-all memoir

A quick call to Tom Goff, my racing expert friend, would bring me up to speed on whether one of the Queen’s horses had won that week, or another had recently had a foal. Her knowledge of the turf is prodigious.</p> <p>“During a separate conversation, the week after my father died, the Queen said how sorry she was, and asked if his horse was running at Windsor that evening. It was. I had absolutely no idea about it, and was completely lost for words.”</p> <p>Mr Cameron added Her Majesty was “better informed than most politicians” and wrote he would always leave with a “spring in his step”. </p> <p>The former country’s leader admitted in an interview with John Humphry, some of his comments about the monarch - particularly the one where he said the Queen “purred down the line” to him after informing her Scotland had voted no to independence - was a “terrible mistake”. </p>

Cameron Daddo reveals the secret that saved his broken marriage

<p>Cameron Daddo and wife Alison Brahe have forever been known as Australia’s “golden couple”.</p> <p>The dashing TV presenter and the beautiful model tied the knot in 1991, marking their commitment of a lifetime to one another.</p> <p>Now, 28 years and three kids later, the pair are revealing all their secrets, the good, the bad and the ugly.</p> <p>They’re parents to daughters Lotus, 23, and Bodhi, 13, and son River, 19, and according to the famous couple, they’ve dealt with everything life could possibly throw at them.</p> <p>Last week, the two launched <em>Separate Bathrooms And Other Handy Marriage Tips</em>, a candid podcast on the ins and outs of marriage.</p> <p>“Anything you can throw at a marriage – we’ve done it!” Cameron told <a rel="noopener" href="https://www.nowtolove.com.au/celebrity/celeb-news/cameron-daddo-alison-brahe-marriage-56137" target="_blank"><em>Woman’s Day</em></a>.</p> <p>“We’ve lived in multiple countries, we’ve had kids, and we’ve been separated, and we’ve been bankrupt,” Alison said, also revealing that she and her husband have had hours of marriage counselling.</p> <p>Earlier in the year, Cameron opened up about his unfaithfulness to his wife when he was living in the US in 1994.</p> <p>“I was the one who left the marriage,” said the 54-year-old. And when it came to leaving the past behind, “honesty was the best policy”. Though he admits his marriage hasn’t been the same since.</p> <p>Alison says the reasoning behind the podcast was so she could break the false expectations many have before going into a marriage. Her inspiration were the many fans who put the two on a pedestal, labelling their relationship as “couple goals” or saying they wish they could “have what you have".</p> <p>“You don’t get to 28 years of marriage without a hell of a lot of work and struggles – and a fair chunk of pain and tears,” said the 49-year-old former model.</p> <p>“But what you do get is a massive amount of learning – you learn forgiveness and there’s an enormous amount of self-growth. We just didn’t want anyone thinking that their marriage or relationship sucked in comparison to ours.”</p> <p>And when it comes to romance, Alison and Cameron say that there’s no one size fits all.</p> <p>"Everyone's definition of romance is going to be different," Alison explains, saying that while some may appreciate flowers and chocolates, another may expect something completely different.</p> <p>When it comes to Cameron, he just wants someone who will listen. </p> <p>“I find it very sexy – when someone asks you a question and listens, and actually pays attention,” he said.</p> <p>But when it comes to the saving grace that kept their marriage going, Cameron said it was actions that allowed them to move forward.</p> <p>"I read somewhere that love is a verb," he says. "The feeling of love comes from the action of love and if you're falling out of love, choose the action to love them! That's where the feelings of love start to grow from."</p>

The mastermind behind the ball tampering cricket scandal revealed

<p>Ex vice-captain David Warner has been revealed as the mastermind of the ball tampering scandal by Cricket Australia.</p> <p>The sports governing body has given the charges for each player involved in the incident, which includes David Warner and Steve Smith both being stripped of their leadership abilities and receiving a one-year ban from the sport.</p> <p>Warner will never be able to be placed in a leadership role again, while Smith is banned from any leadership involvement for 12 months.</p> <p>Cameron Bancroft will be banned for nine months, after he was caught on camera attempting to hide a piece of sandpaper by putting it down his pants.</p> <p>On Wednesday, Cricket Australia confirmed that all three players had been charged with a breach of Article 2.3.5 of the code of conduct, which means that their behaviour was “contrary to the spirit of the game” and brought the game into disrepute.</p> <p>The players also received individual charges, with David Warner being charged with the “development of a plan” to tamper with the surface of the ball.</p> <p>As well as creating the plan, Warner’s offences also included instructing a junior to carry out the plan, advising him and showing him how to do it.</p> <p>He also failed to report his knowledge, misled match officials and failed to voluntarily report his knowledge after the incident occurred.</p> <p>Smith was charged with knowledge of the plan, failure to take steps to prevent it, directing the evidence be concealed, seeking to mislead officials and making misleading public comments regarding the incident.</p> <p>Bancroft was charged with a breach based on knowledge of the plot, carrying it out, concealing evidence, seeking to mislead officials and making misleading public statements.</p> <p>CEO of Cricket Australia James Sutherland said he is “satisfied” with the punishments given in order to protect the integrity of cricket.</p> <p>Shane Warne said the “jump to hysteria” means the “punishment just might not fit the crime”.</p> <p>“There are those countries that don’t like Australia, don’t like individuals in the team, and there has been a build-up of hate which has exploded and created this tornado of hysteria,” he wrote.</p> <p>Do you think the punishment is fair? Cameron Daddo opens up about desperate money struggles

<p>Australian actor and TV presenter Cameron Daddo has opened up about the secret money struggles that gripped his family when he first moved to Hollywood.   </p> <p>Things weren’t always so great for the now 52-year-old star who spoke openly about his difficulties in an interview with Mia Freedman on her No Filter podcast.</p> <p>“It got very tense for a while on several occasions,” Daddo said.</p> <p>He added: “Then something would open up and suddenly you forget there was a moment where we had $100 in the bank because now we’re doing okay.”</p> <p>Daddo added that he owed a lot of the success he is now achieving to the support of his family, in particular his wife Alison who he’s been married to for 25 years.</p> <p>Daddo said: “Even during the most difficult times in our marriage, we both stayed and answered the questions.”</p>

James Cameron thought “Titanic” would be a failure

<p>James Cameron has revealed the reasons why the studio thought the blockbuster was doomed to be a disaster.</p> <p>In an excerpt in Stephen Galloway’s new biography <em>Leading Lady: Sherry Lansing and the Making of A Hollywood Groundbreaker</em>, the director explained that various problems were being encountered as the film neared closer to its 1997 release date.</p> <p>“The business heads at Paramount acted like they’d been diagnosed with terminal cancer – a lot of grim faces and a triage approach to releasing the movie,” he said.</p> <p>“Everyone thought they were going to lose money, and all efforts were simply to make sure the haemorrhage was not fatal.”</p> <p>Cameron was forced to push the movie’s release date to August after issues with complex visual effects and the movie’s running time.</p> <p>August was considered “a dumping ground” for the movie release and the movie was receiving a lot of negative press for cost overruns, set safety and delivery dates.</p> <p>“We were the biggest morons in Hollywood history and the press had the long knives out, sharpening them as we approached our summer release. It would have reached a crescendo of scorn just as we put the film in theatres,” he explained.</p> <p>Cameron suggested the idea to deal with the press by taking a step back and proving them wrong and his plan succeeded.</p> <p>“No one more surprised than myself, because nothing like it had ever been tried. But it was a strategy that revealed itself in the heat of battle – necessity was the mother of invention. And desperate times called for desperate measures.”</p> <p>Although he was receiving positive feedback about the film, Cameron still believed it would end his career due to the debt the film had racked up.</p> <p>“Nobody thought we were EVER going to break even. And I pretty much assumed at that time that I’d never work again.”</p> <p><em>Titanic</em> went on to become one of the highest grossing films of all time with a box office revenue of US $2.18 billion. Cameron is now a legend in Hollywood and has gone on to create many other great films. </p>

The Queen officially appoints Theresa May as Britain’s second female Prime Minister
